Amidst the challenges brought by recent environmental disasters, the Brazilian mining sector has received a proposal for coordinated action to assist affected communities.
Paulo Serpa, Country Manager of Lavras Gold, highlighted the importance of a joint response from the entities that make up the mining production chain.
The suggestion is that support be centralized through entities such as IBRAM, CNI’s COMIN, Anepac, Instituto Aço Brasil, Abal, Abimaq, among others, which could mobilise their members to contribute financially and materially.
Serpa emphasized the need for transparency in this process, suggesting that Fiergs be responsible for coordinating and reporting on the participation of each sector.
Although Lavras do Sul, where Lavras Gold is located, is not directly affected by the recent floods, the region faces challenges resulting from the interruption of basic services due to extreme weather conditions.
The leader highlights that the call for solidarity extends mainly to the hardest-hit areas, such as Porto Alegre and other riverside cities.
Additionally, Serpa acknowledges the obstacles faced by the mining sector in Rio Grande do Sul, especially regarding project licensing.
Companies like Nexa Resources, Mineração Rio Grande, and Águia Fertilizantes have faced significant difficulties in advancing their ventures in the region due to a series of regulatory and environmental issues.
In this context, it is evident that the proposal for coordinated action not only demonstrates solidarity with the affected communities but also seeks to strengthen the mining sector’s commitment to sustainable development and social responsibility.
