Brazil’s National Mining Agency (ANM) Discusses Mining 4.0 at Angola’s Second International Diamond Conference

In October, Brazil’s National Mining Agency (ANM) participated in Angola’s Second International Diamond Conference (AIDC). Held October 23rd and 24th in Saurimo, Lunda-Sul Province, the conference brought together approximately 300 participants, including industry leaders, experts, and professionals, to discuss the sustainable future of Angola’s diamond industry and the role of Mining 4.0 in a global context.

Under the theme “Investing Together to Make a Difference in Communities,” the conference was organized by Angola’s Ministry of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas in partnership with Endiama. Representing Brazil, ANM Director Tasso Mendonça delivered a presentation titled “Innovation, Technology, and Mining 4.0,” highlighting the digital transformation of the sector.

ANM’s Participation

Mendonça explained that the Mining 4.0 model seeks to create more sustainable, safe, and productive operations by integrating innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence and automation.

Our objective is to transform mining processes into systems that minimize environmental impact, promote the recovery of degraded areas, utilize resources efficiently, and engage with local communities and stakeholders.

He also emphasized that the digitization of processes facilitates more precise geological surveys, optimizes resource use, and improves connectivity between operations. Furthermore, the use of technology raises safety levels, reducing worker exposure to risky activities, and contributes to data-driven decision-making.

Thematic Panels, Global Discussions, and Preparatory Workshop

The conference featured 12 thematic panels over two days. Day one covered the role of diamonds in the global market, the differences between natural and synthetic diamonds, infrastructure, technological innovation, and international certifications such as the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme.

Day two addressed topics such as social responsibility in mining, the Kimberley Process (an international mechanism to combat the trade in conflict diamonds), and financing for diamond projects.

A workshop focused on the assessment and classification of mineral resources and reserves was held on October 21st, bringing together sector experts to foster the exchange of ideas and technical experiences.
