In 2022, estimates based on CFEM revenue indicated that the value of Brazilian Mineral Production (PMB) was approximately R$ 250 billion, representing a decrease of about 26% compared to 2021, when PMB reached a record of R$ 339.1 billion.
This decline can be largely explained by the lower price of mineral commodities in the market, with emphasis on iron ore, which is the main product of the Brazilian mineral industry and accounted for more than 61% of the total PMB in 2022, with a value of R$ 153.5 billion.
The other minerals with the largest share of PMB in 2022 were gold, with R$ 23.9 billion, copper, with R$ 15.2 billion, dolomitic limestone, with R$ 8.55 billion, and bauxite, with R$ 5.66 billion.
In geographical terms, the state of Minas Gerais led the way in mineral production in 2022, with a value of R$ 100.5 billion, followed by Pará, which had led production in the previous year, with R$ 92.3 billion. The other three states with the highest mineral production were Bahia, Goiás, and São Paulo.
The drop in the value of PMB in 2022 also impacted the collection of the Financial Contribution for Mineral Exploration (CFEM), which reached R$ 7.018 billion, a decrease of more than 30% compared to 2021, when it was R$ 10.3 billion. The municipalities of Parauapebas and Canaã dos Carajás, in Pará, led the collection of CFEM in 2022, with R$ 1.385 billion and R$ 1.060 billion, respectively. Following are the municipalities of Conceição do Mato Dentro, Itabirito, and Mariana, in Minas Gerais.
