Ígnea Joins the Brazilian Association of Mineral Research Companies – ABPM

The Ígnea Geology & Environment is pleased to announce its affiliation as a member company of the Brazilian Association of Mineral and Mining Research Companies – ABPM. Our perspective as an associated company reinforces the feeling that we are heading in the right direction for a competitive and sustainable Brazilian mining.

The addition of new companies operating in the mining sector in Brazil to the ABPM associates’ roster increases the representativeness of the entity and enhances its power of dialogue with constituted authorities, as highlighted by Luís Maurício Azevedo, president of ABPM.

ABPM, founded on June 21, 2012, is a private, non-profit entity with the goal of representing and defending the interests of the mining sector focused on mineral research in Brazil.

In addition to valuing mineral research for the Brazilian and global economy, ABPM participates in the formulation of public policies of interest to the mining industry in Brazil and the protection of Brazilian mineral heritage.

BUILDING NEW HORIZONS

The institution actively participates in and organizes congresses, exhibitions, courses, seminars, workshops, and lectures to develop better knowledge through the dissemination and enhancement of technological capabilities and mineral production.

Regarding partnership actions and dialogues with the government, ABPM has participated in meetings of the Working Group for the definition of fertilizer minerals policy, the Mineral Transformation Committee of the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), and ABPM has been designated as a member of the Mineral CT of MCTIC.

Regarding conflicts between Mining and INCRA settlement areas, ABPM has discussed solutions with the Partnership and Investment Secretariat of the Ministry of Economy (SPI/ME) and with ANM.

CARING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

At the invitation of the British Chamber of Commerce, ABPM participated in a panel on the Global Standard for Dam Safety, expressing how Brazilian legislation has approached international best practices.

With the approval of Law 14,066/2020, more than 40 new provisions have become part of the National Dam Safety Policy Law, leading ANM to review the specific resolution on the subject.

Regarding dam safety, at the request of some associated companies, ABPM sent a letter to ANM requesting an extension of the deadline for compliance with requirements in the resolution on dam safety related to the deactivation of certain structures.

Within the sustainability theme, ABPM maintained a close dialogue and interaction with the WWF organization, clarifying issues about mining activity and its commitment to reconciling productive activity with the environment.

As ABPM accumulates internal discussions about mining in indigenous lands, this entity was invited and participated in a panel on the subject at the Brazilian Geological Congress, advocating for the urgent regulation of Article 231 of the Federal Constitution.

MINING AND SOCIETY

In the second half of this year, ABPM inaugurated the series of webinars: “Mining and Society,” with the participation of authorities and company representatives discussing topics such as:

  • The future of mining and mining of the future;
  • The challenges for more competitive mining in Brazil;
  • The allure of gold and diamond markets and the unfair competition of illegal activities; and
  • The impact of new dam safety standards on mining.

Ígnea is pleased to be part of ABPM and, in this way, support the growth and appreciation of the Brazilian mining sector.
