On the last Tuesday (10), Inácio Melo, director-president of the Geological Survey of Brazil (SGB), and Mauro Sousa, director-general of the National Mining Agency (ANM), met to discuss the strengthening of the Brazilian mineral sector.
The focus of the meeting was on the synergistic collaboration between the institutions and joint strategies to promote public policies and disseminate geoscientific, geoeconomic, and mineral-economic knowledge.
The SGB director emphasized the crucial role of mining in creating direct and indirect jobs, highlighting that the ANM acts as an agent in transforming the mineral sector. He underscored the joint commitment to ensuring that mining activities are conducted safely and sustainably, in full compliance with environmental laws and regulations.
Additionally, Mello emphasized the importance of the ANM in creating rules and incentives for the sector, aiming at the rational use of mineral resources. “This generates wealth and well-being for society,” he added.
Mauro Sousa highlighted the importance of the partnership with the SGB to enhance the knowledge of the country’s geological potential and attract investments.
We work synergistically and complementarily to expand and expedite results for mining, which plays a crucial role in the economic and social development of Brazil,” he said.
To further strengthen this partnership, the SGB made equipment donations, including a camera, teleprompter, tablet, and microphones. This initiative aims to serve public interest, promoting institutional actions and participation in relevant events.
Technical Cooperation Agreement
In 2022, a robust Technical Cooperation Agreement was signed between the National Mining Agency (ANM), the Geological Survey of Brazil (SGB), and the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME).
Valid until the end of 2025, with the possibility of extension, the agreement primarily aims to integrate the institutional activities of the entities involved.
The main focus of this collaboration is to promote public policies for the Brazilian mineral sector, with the prospect of establishing the National Mining Observatory.
The importance of this partnership lies in its vital contribution to integrating activities, synergizing competencies, streamlining processes, and developing a robust strategic plan.
Learn more about the National Mining Agency
The National Mining Agency (ANM), committed to disseminating relevant information about mining performance in Brazil, presents the Brazilian Mineral Yearbook – Main Metallic Substances.
This compendium provides crucial data for the base year 2021 for metallic substances such as aluminum, copper, chrome, tin, iron, manganese, niobium, nickel, gold, vanadium, and zinc.
In 2021, metallic substances represented approximately 89% of the total value of Brazilian mineral production.
Among these substances, 11 stand out, accounting for 9.7% of the global production value. Aluminum, copper, chrome, tin, iron, manganese, niobium, nickel, gold, vanadium, and zinc are the protagonists in this scenario.
The production of these substances reached the significant figure of R$ 312.9 billion, with iron being the major highlight, contributing significantly with 80.1%. It is worth noting that iron production is concentrated mainly in the states of Pará and Minas Gerais.
