On the last Friday of 2024 (December 27th), the National Mining Agency (ANM) announced the distribution of R$ 258,379,211.36 in mining royalties to 1,471 municipalities in different regions of Brazil. This amount corresponds to the supplement of the 15% advance payment of the total collected from the Financial Compensation for Mineral Exploration (CFEM) between May and November 2024.
The resources are allocated to cities directly impacted by mining activity, including those with infrastructure such as railways, pipelines, and ports, essential for the transportation and export of minerals.
Impacts and Scope
Among the municipalities that received the most resources are Morro do Pilar (MG), with more than R$ 11 million, and Caetité (BA), which received approximately R$ 10.9 million. Cities like Sento Sé (BA), Ladário (MS), and Guanhães (MG) are also among the most benefited, with amounts exceeding R$ 6 million each.
According to ANM, this distribution aims to economically compensate for the environmental, social, and economic impacts caused by mining activities. Additionally, municipalities can use the resources to invest in infrastructure, health, education, and other priority areas.
Next Steps
The publication of the final list of municipalities affected by mining activity allowed these amounts to be transferred with greater precision and transparency. Soon, ANM should release the transfers intended for bordering municipalities, completing the distribution of the amount collected during the period.
The CFEM is a tax paid by mining companies and represents an important source of revenue for many cities that coexist with the impacts of mining. Its collection directly reflects the country’s mineral production and the effectiveness of sector oversight.
