The Geological Survey of Brazil (SGB) is accepting suggestions from the public until June 15 through an open public consultation to structure the construction of the Decennial Basic Geological Mapping Plan (PlanGeo) 2025-2034.
Active participation from society in this process ensures that the future of geology and mining in Brazil is built collaboratively, transparently, and with a focus on sustainable development,” says Inácio Melo, SGB’s director-president.
Currently in the public consultation phase, PlanGeo 2025-2034 aims to set priorities for Brazilian geological mapping for the next ten years, focusing on areas with potential for new mineral discoveries, including critical minerals for the energy transition.
Valdir Silveira, SGB’s Director of Geology and Mineral Resources, highlights the importance of participation.
PlanGeo is a fundamental instrument to guide SGB’s actions and ensure that investments in geological research and mapping meet the needs of the productive sector and society as a whole,” Silveira adds.
The public consultation offers the population the opportunity to comment and suggest priorities for research, including mineral provinces, mining districts, and new frontiers of geological knowledge.
In addition to allowing users to indicate priorities from 60 pre-selected blocks distributed in the Amazon, Northeast, and Central-Southern regions, the platform allows for the suggestion of new areas and scales for geological mapping.
This is a chance to shape the future of mining in Brazil, to ensure that mineral resource exploration is done responsibly and sustainably, and that investments are directed to areas with the greatest potential for the country’s development,” concludes SGB’s director-president.
